Travel to Athens

On arriving to Athens via airport, you will be able to take a taxi or bus to the destination you require. Taxis are metered but you usually expected to pay extra if you have a lot of luggage with you. Although run by the meter, Taxis are generally an inexpensive way of traveling in and around Athens; you may however find it difficult to find one during rush hours as it can become extremely busy. It is important to make sure that the taxi is meters, as many taxi drivers have been known to over charge tourists. Although officially forbidden, it is not uncommon to find that the taxi you have flagged down has a customer in it already. In this case, you would still be expected to pay the full taxi fare as if you were traveling alone.

If travelling from the Airport by bus towards Athens, you will notice that there are three lanes for the bus to travel on. The first bus line takes you directly to the metro station where you can use the same bus ticket to go anywhere using the metro, for the next 24 hours. The second line brings you to the Syntagma Square, the heart of Athens. The third line's destination is Piraeus,( a suburb located 9 km to the south-west of the center of Athens).

Thankfully due to regeneration, the new upgraded Athens metro system (known in Greece as the Attiko Metro) runs more smoothly and has ultimately taken the pressure off the roads, allowing vehicles to move more freely around the city. If you wish to go shopping in Athens, this form of transport will allow you to reach your destination quicker and hassle free than if you were to use over ground transport.

Another way of travelling quickly is by railway. There are two railways stations in Athens: the Peloponnese station and the Larisis station. The Peloponnese station will only allow trains to go to and from Peloponnese. On the other hand the Larisis station has trains that will allow passengers to travel to northern Greece as well as to nearby countries.

It is preferred that tourists do not travel around the city of Athens in there own or hired car or bikes. However, if you choose to drive, it is highly recommended that you are able to read and understand the traffic signs and signals. It is also extremely difficult to find a place to park your rented car, for this reason it is better for you to reconsider renting a car.
