To fully enjoy the beaches in Athens, it is important that visitors are aware of the climate of Athens. The best time to visit this city is generally in spring and in late autumn. This is because the weather will usually be perfect, not too hot or too cold for the visitors. The weather generally stays warm up to around November time. During this period you will find that the weather is great for eating out in Athens, and exploring the sites and countryside. The local beaches in Athens are a great place to visit when all the youngsters have returned back to college.
It is not advisable to visit Athens during the summer as for many it can become uncomfortably hot and dry. The average temperature of Athens in July is 33`C and it is common for heat waves to occur, on these days the temperature can reach an uncomfortable 37`C. If you do decide to travel to Athens during the summer, it is important that you are prepared. The down side will be that you will find that it will be more crowed, and booking rooms will also be difficult. The good side however is that Athens is generally more fun to go to in the summer, if you enjoy having a lot of people around you, you will find that the beaches in Athens will be lively and the Athens nightlife will be more enjoyable.
In the winter, the city is chilly, rainy, or even occasionally it may snow. Although this is not the best time to visit the beaches, it is a good time to enjoy the historical monuments and other places of interest without countless other tourists.
Athens is also known for its smog on the main roads in and around peak hours; this is particularly the case during the hot weather. Some suggest that that the reason behind this is the way in which the city has been enclosed by mountains, thus not allowing the smog to escape easily and giving the impression of pollution. To control this problem, measures have been taken by the Greek authorities to improve the air quality through-out the 1990’s.
