Although it may not be the first goal of a visitor, one cannot deny that Athens Greece can be a wonderful place to shop. When combined, shopping and eating out in Athens gives you a thoroughly enjoyable shopping experience

If you are interested in buying designer fashion items, as well as expensive jewelry, than you will be pleased to know that this can all be found on the streets of Kolonaki. Here you will find all the major designer shops; Gucci , Versace and Bulgari to name just a few. Kolonaki has always been regarded as the most trendiest and fashionable area, incorporating the trendiest restaurants in Athens with trendy coffee bars to make the shopping experience complete. It has been suggested that ElenTsalakof Street is among one of the six most expensive streets in the world.

For the average tourist looking for an enjoyable shopping experience in Athens, it is recommended to go to Ermou, a street off Syntagma Square. This is an ideal shopping destination for tourists looking for clothes and accessories. Here you will find shops such as Marks & Spencer, Nike and Bennetton, you may find that prices in these well known brand shops are slightly cheaper in Athens. Here in Syntagma Square you will also come across shops specializing in accessories such as Greek hand-made jewelry and souvenirs; these are extremely popular with tourists. The busiest shopping street in Athens, Ermou Street has recently been paved to accommodate the great number of pedestrians

The Monastiriki Flea Market in Plaka offers both local and tourists a more vibrant and exciting shopping experience. This open air market takes place every day between the hours of 8am to 2pm. Here we find most of the antique shops, dealing in pieces which can be bought by bartering. Here one can find almost anything; it is an eclectic mix of both modern to classical pieces, both old and new. These goods range from second hand items such as old records, fake designer goods, to antique glass and silver items; here, one mans junk is another mans treasure!

For those who are serious about shopping in the modern way without needing to worry about the weather in Athens, the best place to visit is The Mall in Maroussi. This is a brand new shopping complex is the first shopping complex in Greece, and stands proudly next to the Olympic stadium, it is therefore extremely accessible via public transport.

If you are looking for fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, the only place to visit is the Central Market. This in itself can be a wonderful chance to introduce you to fresh local produce and allow you taste buds to experiment and enjoy!
